The strongest student-athletes meet to lift their way to the podium

22 July 2024

Five days of sheer strength and concentration start in Estonia with the Tartu 2024 FISU World University Championship Powerlifting (23-27 July).

The University of Tartu Sports Hall is ready to have its floors ans bars covered in talcum powder or chalk as the best powerlifting student-athletes from 22 countries have gathered in Estonia to compare not only strength and stamina but also technique.

Known as the student capital of Estonia, Tartu is the cultural capital of Europe 2024. The oldest city of the Baltic States is preparing to host the best young powerlifting student-athletes for the first ever FISU World University Championship of this sport.

Preparation and concentration are key before moving to strength and technique.

The categories

Like in many other sports, the athletes are divided by gender and weight. After that, three seems to be the magic number: three different disciplines (squat, bench press and deadlift), three attempts at maximum weight at each lift and… three referees that validate the technique of each lift.

The teams

209 athletes from 22 teams and three continents will be shifting weights in Tartu.
