It’s summertime in the northern hemisphere, and for many that means it’s golf season. For FISU that is the case as student golfers from around the world are set to arrive in Finland to compete at the Kuortane-Seinäjoki 2024 FISU World University Championship Golf. The opening round goes 27 August with the fourth and final round taking place on the 30th.
This is the 19th edition of the FISU Championship Golf and the first time it is being held in Finland. “Hosting the first Golf World Championship in Finland is a special honor for us. We aim to provide players and coaches from around the world with an unforgettable experience of Finland as a quality golf destination and a clean, safe, skilled, and international society,” said event organising committee chairman Tapio Korjus. However, this region in Finland is experienced in hosting FISU Championships having previously held the Seinäjoki 2008 FISU Championship Floorball in, the Kuortane 2012 FISU Championship Wrestling, and the Kuortane 2018 FISU Championship Orienteering.
Ruuhikoski Golf Club is the host course for this year’s event and was designed by internationally renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., whose vast work includes designing holes at the home of the Masters, the Augusta National Golf Club. This course will significantly challenge competitors with its layout that seamlessly blends into the beautiful Nordic landscape and with water featuring prominently, especially on the back nine.
87 women and men will compete in Kuortane-Seinäjoki representing 20 countries and five continents, with some athletes inside or just outside the World Amateur Golf Rankings top 100. Individual and team stroke play competition will take place over four rounds, with the two best results each day from each nation will count for those in the team competition.
