Cooperation with UNESCO
FISU is proud to celebrate the International day of University Sports (IDUS) together with the renowned organisation UNESCO. The proclamation of IDUS by UNESCO leaves no doubt about the work done together.
“Sport opens up new horizons and gives joy and satisfaction at all ages. When practiced in peer groups within the framework of the University, enhanced by its inclusion in a prestigious, institutional setting, sport is for young people, at a critical time in their lives, a formidable tool for individual and collective development. It promotes values as essential as fair play, respect, team spirit, responsibility and perseverance, and enriches in an inspiring way the students’ discipline. It helps talents bloom, enables the discovery of new forms of play and interaction, and encourages excellence. This International Day of University Sport is an opportunity to celebrate all the benefits of sport. It is also an opportunity to highlight the important social role played by universities in the establishment of a world of greater solidarity, and the forging of responsible, fulfilled citizens.”
Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO
In this spirit, UNESCO is proud to support the International University Sports Federation and work together towards upholding a more peaceful and fair sporting and social environment.
In addition, for several years, FISU has been a member of the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS) advising the ministers of sport of the member countries of the United Nations to promote the role and value of sport and its inclusion in public policy. CIGEPS is comprised of expert representatives in the field of physical education and sport, and FISU is a member of its Permanent Consultative Council.
