A popular sport in Asia, Woodball appeared in the World University Championship programme in 2004. The sport was invented in Chinese Taipei in 1990. Players use a mallet to pass a ball through gates. The game can be played on grass, sand or indoors.

The History of Woodball in FISU
Since 2004, woodball is part of the programme of the World University Championships. After a first edition organised by Chinese Taipei, two more editions were held in Thailand and Uganda.
With an average of 11 countries represented, the highest number of athletes taking part was recorded in Bangkok in 2006 with 91 players.
